What is VPAT?
The standard way of displaying process history on a process form is not always understood by the user. An average user may find it hard to actually track the path of the task, let alone the alternative paths that the process task may take. That information is often missing.
VPAT is a tool which has been developed to enable the users to track the task flow as a diagram. It is available to process users as an additional tab in the task folder.
VPAT VPAT allows the user to view both the entire process, and the path that the task has taken to arrive at its current stage on the process.
VPAT also enables task monitoring. You can quickly check e.g. if the process has passed the approval phase, or is it still awaiting its approval.
VPAT allows users to understand the whole process and hence more easily comprehend their role in the process. Therefore users can operate the process more effectively, and managers can easily improve and modify the processes. Additionally, it enables easy modeling of new processes, which can be based on the knowledge gained in course of operating the live ones.
How does VPAT work?
The VPAT form displays a faithful copy of the process map exactly as it was build in the Metastorm Designer.
The user can easily and quickly see the path the task has taken through the process and the stage in the process where the task resides. All the stages that the task has passed through are coloured as are the actions that have been executed within the process.
The current stage is highlighted for easy verification of task progress. Additional audit trail information is displayed as a hint when the cursor hovers over the stage or action.
When a process map is too large to fit on the form, the user can scroll around a thumbnail of the process map to move to the required process section quickly.
Process engineering & VPAT
The Process Designer takes advantage of the VPAT by attaching the VPAT library to the process and selecting the VPAT form at the stages that they wish to make the Visual Audit Trail available. If the process is changed, the VPAT will automatically reflect the new process map without any intervention from the process designer. No programming is required. A user can always browse a process history which is based upon the latest available version of the process.
Specifications
VPAT is compatible with Metastorm BPM Version 7 and Release 6.5. When using the VPAT with Release 6.5, download the icon set from http://www.dsa.com.pl/vpat/icons.zip.
Installations based on SQL Server 2000 and SQL Server 2005 are supported. The installer included in the package makes configuration of the application easy. After installation and start-up, VPAT required no further configuration. Process definition updates and the history display in the form is handled automatically.
VPAT uses Metastorm BPM base to pick process definitions. To work correctly, VPAT needs .NET Framework 1.1 and a configured connection to Metastorm BPM database (use the creator during installation to configure).
